Last night we were invited to an advanced screening of The Guardian.
I have never been to an advanced screening. So I feel obligated to right a review. This will be my first written movie review. Let's see how it goes.
No surprises here, unless of course you have never seen Top Gun or Backdraft or 100 other movies that I could list that follow the same storyline and plot. Of course there hasn't been a movie to follow this plot where guys are jumping out of Coast Guard helicopters to save people's lives.
The movie was well made, the acting was great, the movie was able to draw you in and engage you emotionally. The special effects were great, the music was great, the scenery was great. Not too many cornball lines, I laughed heartily in places. However, there was nothing new. It was very predictable. You knew what was going to happen and how things were going to end up before they started showing the previews.
Oh one thing I forgot to mention, there is a love story in there, which is very surprising. Two people in love, the guy does something stupid, they break up...bet you can't guess what happens next! I guess the unique thing was that it happened with 2 couples rather than one. Hey, there are two stars in this movie, makes sense they should each have their "girl."
I have had this complaint for years...95 percent of what Hollywood puts out is the same old regurgitated stuff. Sure they change the actors, make it helicopters instead of race cars, but it is all the same.
I am sure that I am not brighter than all the executives in Hollywood. They must see what they are doing, right? So why do they still do it?
Simple, even the worst movie they crank out makes them millions of dollars. It would be risky to try something new. It would be hard work to come up with an original idea. Why bother? 40 million people will end up watching The Guardian and the Hollywood execs will cash their check.
It is cheap and easy to do the safe thing, the same thing everyone else has done a hundred times before. It is hard and risky to do something new and original.
Of course, the rewards are much greater too.
Be original, don't bother watching The Guardian, the trailer should be enough and have a good one!
